What is RPL and Why is it Valuable?

RPL, or Recognition of Prior Learning, is an alternate, legitimate and cost effective pathway to formal study. It is a process of validating the knowledge and experience that a person has acquired through the length of their career.

This validation can lead to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment or a full qualification.

AIM Operations Manager Learning and Development Tony Frangou said that RPL provides a way of formally recognising the skills and knowledge managers have acquired at work.

“The RPL process requires the candidate to assemble a portfolio of evidence to prove that they have current competence in a particular area,” Mr Frangou said.

“At AIM the areas of competence are in management and leadership and include finance, operational planning, strategy, HR, risk, project management, quality, innovation and more.

“With an RPL qualification or Statement of Attainment behind them, many people have renewed confidence to tackle further study,” he said.

RPL is valuable to employers as a retention and professional development strategy for their staff. Industry also benefits from the RPL process as it allows more people to access industry benchmarks and standards expressed through qualifications and competencies.
